in session today we have the Cesarians a new act featuring ex-Penthouse frontman Charlie Finke along with Justine Armatage (Christian Death, Luke Haines' Baader Meinhoff, Gretchen Hofner), Jan Noble (Monkey Island) plus Suzy Speedmaster (trombone), Ally Conder (clarinet) - references: Leonard Cohen, Scott Walker et al - a happy cabaret with a Berlin bop!
www.myspace.com/thecesarians

we also welcome live in session the Wilko Johnson Band - i don't know what to say - for those not paying attention Wilko came to prominance as guitar player with the mighty Dr Feelgood (c1973-1977); then his own band Solid Senders before joining Ian Dury's Blockheads; Wilko continues to this day with his own band featuring Blockhead bassist Norman Watt-Roy and drummer (Steve) Monti (ex-Curve, Jesus and Mary Chain) - a true legend and one of Britains greatest ever guitarists.

broadcast live on Resonance 104.4 fm - 5 til 6.30pm (UK time) - Wednesday 22nd November 2006 - fm in London, streaming from www.resonancefm.com
a show with old friends...

live in session on this weeks show... we welcome the fantastic Alexander Tucker - back for his 2nd 'sHRiMP session (or is it his 3rd?) - Tucker releases a new studio album "Furrowed Brow" (ATP/R) next week - this time he has combined harmonised vocal patterns, layered instrumentation and heavy sonic bliss riffs to create a cross-between David Crosby, doom metal and Terry Riley - nice! Alex is also a visual artist & keen BlackFriday listeners should note that he has just done the sleeve for Nordic doom-master Wolfmangler's new album (on Aurora Borealis).
www.atpfestival.com/atp-recordings/alexander-tucker

we also welcome back new luddite & artist Denys Avis aka DJ Wheelie-Bag - he will be previewing the upcoming annual Wheelie Bag Soundclash which should be an essential date in everyones diary - we'll also be talking to Denys about a new film about him and his Wheelie Bag sound systems.
www.djwheeliebag.co.uk

we should have had Espers live in the studio but sadly they have something better to do - can't imagine what? so, sorry if you were (like me) looking forward to that

broadcast live on Resonance 104.4 fm - 5 til 6.30pm (UK time) - Wednesday 8th November 2006 - fm in London, streaming from www.resonancefm.com

double helping of live music from across the pond on this weeks show...

well pleased to have David Lowery & Johnny Hickman from Cracker in for a live session - in town for a couple of sold-out shows at the Borderline to promote their current album 'Greenland' (amazingly their 7th). for those too young or with short memories David Lowery fronted (and indeed fronts) Santa Cruz's finest sons Camper Van Beethoven.
www.crackersoul.com

our exciting 2nd live act are the C.R.Avery Band..... C R is a beatboxer, singer-songwriter, poet and musician from Ontario, Canada; author of hip-hop operas & regular performer at poetry slams. appearing this week at the Borderline (9/11) with his band - music has been compared both Bruce Springsteen & Tom Waits which both make sense to me (the early Bruce angle hits home to me most, the material is very original mind) - sometimes semi-spoken gritty tales from the street (so yeah maybe a bit of Lou Reed in there as well); Avery has a reputation as an exhilarating performer so this should be a real treat.
www.cravery.com

also a tribute sequence to Jason DiEmilio who sadly took his own life last week. From Philadelphia Jason made a succession of 7"s and a few albums under the name Azusa Plane & one full-length as Spires of Oxford back in 1995-2001 whilst also running a couple of record labels. A truly inspirational drone artist who certainly helped change my own listening habits, challenged my thoughts on how one could make music & even my opinion on what music is and what it is for. www.pitchforkmedia.com/page/news/category/obituary

also in the bag: Sh*t & Shine, Swagger Jack, Meg Baird/Helena Espvall/Sharron Kraus, Joe Lally & the Rank Deluxe.

your guides: Kev Head, Roxanne Stephen, Charlene Katuwawala, Shona Davidson & Neil Kleiner

if you can please get along to the Resonance website and take part in the Listener Survey - link is right there on the front page www.resonancefm.com - it's very important that as many listeners as possible take part; it is linked to our Arts Council funding and key to securing future funding for ResonanceFM which i hope you think's a good thing - so please make the effort, only takes a couple of minutes.

a double session plus feast this week falling on the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street..
www.whatnextjournal.co.uk/Pages/History/Cable.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Cable_Street

live, we are well chuffed to welcome the Nightingales - Midlands based indie legends fronted by Robert Lloyd who was our guest earlier in year when the band had pre-recorded a session for us. as promised Robert has returned with the full band and a treat you are in for. new album 'Out of True' (Iron Man) is a massive and important addition to their vital back catalogue - "right from the sardonic opening battle cry of Born Again in Birmingham ('Cheap wraps of coke were yet to hit Nuneaton'), Out of True finds the Nightingales not merely back to their best, but actually improved." (Ben Thompson, the Telegraph); "new line-up, which includes the teenage wunderkind guitarist Matt Wood, sees their front man, Robert Lloyd, splatter kitchen-sink cut-up lyrics over scratchy, rhythmically challenging riffs, like a Black Country Captain Beefheart. The album’s opener, Born Again in Birmingham, steamrolls over his unwitting inheritors" (Sunday Times)
www.thenightingales.org.uk

live music also from the fantastic Clark - Warp records solo artiste Chris Clark joins us for a live set. he has just released the album 'Body Riddle' (Warp), his 3rd of juddering electronic music - electronic groans and washes mixed with electro-funk. some free mp3 previews at his throttleclark website, maybe even buy his record if you like them!
www.throttleclark.com
www.warprecords.com

we also have a special feature on Frank Tovey/Fad Gadget - recently released "Fad Gadget by Frank Tovey - A Retrospective in Sound & Vision" (Mute) 2cd/2dvd set is a long planned career length collection of work by the late Frank Tovey, from his pioneering electronic music of the early 80s through to his later 'solo' work via classic recordings, unreleased work and demos. 2 DVDs of documentary and live performance complete this great document. we will be playing an interview with Frank's daughter Morgan Tovey Frost and are lucky enough to have 3 sets to give away (courtesy of Mute records).

still in the bag this week are Bardo Pond (recent cdr release), Reigns (forthcoming on Jonson Family), EmbryoNNCK, Yo La Tengo, Part Chimp, Jack Rose, Radio Birdman, the Evens, CSS, Bert Jansch, Pere Ubu - hey, maybe we'll play a few of these this week. a few new bits slipped in from the likes of... the Phil Collins 3 and Califone.

coming real soon...
Oct 11th - live session from south-coast neo-shoegazers (nu-gaze!) Air Formation plus a session from A Hawk And A Hacksaw recorded a few weeks back at 'sHRiMP/oof! hq - it had people dancing in the street then so don't miss it!
Oct 18th - Austin, Texas based country-singer-songwriter Slaid Cleaves live in session plus more tbc

back to our full-on double session behavior this week...

in live we have Brooklyn noisenik trio Blood On The Wall fresh from a UK tour - recent 2nd album 'Awsomer' (FatCat) has been a 'sHRiMP favorite for the last few months - we are all very excited!
www.fat-cat.co.uk/fatcat/artistInfo.php?artist=Blood+On+The+Wall
www.myspace.com/bloodonthewall

also in live is Viking Moses - VM is Brendon Massei from Tunas, Missouri; blessed with a beautiful baritone voice and accompanied by his own acoustic guitar/banjo and numerous collaborators, Brendon has toured heavily in recent years and released records under differnet names (Spork, Supperbell Roundup et al) and amassed a large body of released and unreleased work. current uk releases through Poptones.
www.vikingmoses.tk
www.myspace.com/vikingmoses

in Mr Head's bag this week are mostly the same records as last week as i played plenty but almost nothing i'd planned - stuff from Bardo Pond (recent cdr release), Reigns (forthcoming on Jonson Family), The Hundred Dollar Band/Alastair Galbraith (actually did play a bit of that but hey you can't hear enough AG), EmbryoNNCK (from earlier in the year but now on delicious vinyl), Yo La Tengo, Part Chimp, Jack Rose, Radio Birdman, Fad Gadget, Suns of Arka plus new to bag gear by the likes of the Evens, CSS, Bert Jansch, Pere Ubu amongst many.

coming real soon...
Oct 4th - the legendary Nightingales plus Warp records artiste Clark both live in session + interview with Morgan Tovey-Frost (daughter of the late Frank Tovey/Fad Gadget) plus Fad Gadget retro DVD/CD giveaway/competition.
Oct 11th - live session from south-coast neo-shoegazers Air Formation (hope that description is ok phil?) plus a session from A Hawk And A Hacksaw recorded a few weeks back at 'sHRiMP/oof! hq - it had people dancing in the street then so don't miss it!

Wednesday, September 20, 2006

gLASSsHRiMP radio: Wed 20th September 2006

we are back on the air after our summer break - sharp listeners will have noticed that we were back last week with a Space Special to tie in with Resonance Space Week but the 'sHRiMP publicity machine that updates this blog wasn't up to speed - we had an amazing specially conceived session from They Came From Stars (I Saw Them), so special thanks to Horton, Dan and the 'Stars' - anyway, on with our normal feast this week...

broadcast live on Resonance 104.4 fm - 5 til 6.30pm (UK time) - Wednesday 20th September 2006 - fm in London, streaming from www.resonancefm.com

live session from the wonderfully twisted Kent-based singer-songwriter Lupen Crook - indie folk with an unique and eccentric side - recent album 'Accident Occur While Sleeping' (Tap n Tin) - we will also talk to Lupen about his current and future activities.
www.lupencrook.co.uk

we have Rupert Orton from the Spitz to talk about the remainder of the Spitz Festival of Folk and maybe upcoming events including much jazz-ness.
www.spitz.co.uk

we also welcome artist Tai Shani in to talk about the happening she is curating this coming Sunday - walkwalkwalk: The Musical, a special walkwalkwalk event - a guided walk with live music from a host of artists en route - confused, Tai will explain.
www.walkwalkwalk.org.uk

in Da Hed's rather lightweight bag this week - new stuff from Bardo Pond (recent cdr release), Grails, Reigns (forthcoming on Jonson Family), The Hundred Dollar Band/Alastair Galbraith, Tara Jane O'Neil, OOIOO, EmbryoNNCK, Yo La Tengo, Part Chimp, Jack Rose and Radio Birdman and maybe something old from Fad Gadget, Suns of Arka and Alastair Galbraith - this won't be the half of it.

live sessions from Fupper & Shimmy Rivers and And Canal

Fupper is the sole work of Simon Hughes (ex-Stanton) - found sounds, atmospheric curios rub shoulders with crackling tape loops, fragile guitars counterpoint these lo-fi sounds. lovely new single 'Show Me Your Hands' just released on Jonson Family.

Shimmy Rivers and And Canal need no introduction to Resonance regulars; timeless, angular and plain difficult to describe. not to be missed, sounds at...

live in session we welcome Mystery Meat - formed from the ashes of their old bands by ex-Ikara Colt bassist Tracy Bellaries, Blood Valley front-man Alex Lindsay and ex-Beachbuggy drummer Adrian - described as a heavier Ikara Colt with scuzzy guitars and ear shattering drums, the Meat deal in rock of the messed-up, heavy, low slung variety. Mystery Meat are a tyrannical trio, they are nasty, sexy and f*cking loud.

here comes the knight! - we also welcome in to the studio Barry Stillwell, head-honcho of the Tapestry organisation to talk today about the upcoming Tapestry Goes West festival being held this year at Margam Park, South Wales, June 30 - July 1 - a move not only of venue from the wild west town in Cornwall but a shift in theme, this year in keeping with it's surroundings Tapestry Goes West is going medieval. plus hopefully a surprised live guest with Barry as well (nothing confirmed as i write).

gLASSsHRiMP radio show: wed 17th 2006

broadcast live on Resonance 104.4 fm - 5 til 6.30pm (London time) - fm in London, streaming from www.resonancefm.com

2 live music guests this week...

we welcome Tarantula AD in the studio for a live session - colossal quasi-classical post-rock or slighty pagan metal crossover with a cello? - tune in to find out! awesome latest record 'Book of Sand' features vocals from Devendra Banhart and Sierra Cassidy (CocoRosie) , "an album to be hidden under your bed, either that or filed next to Saxon’s epic Crusader" (boomcat) - the band are in the UK for an appearance at the ATP Festival.
www.tarantulaad.com
www.myspace.com/tarantulaad

live performance also from Cormac Heron previewing his 'Prolapsed Catholic Guilt Show' to be performed on 18/5 at the 12-Bar in London - Cormac's appearance on the show in March with his 'With Or Without You, I Can't Live With Or Without You' show was an absolute riot; he will be taking a break from live performance after this weeks show so it seemed rude not to have him in - the show will explore Catholicism, the fear of god and the theories of Einstein with the aid of the genre of punk - he's said there won't be any stilt-walking this time, but you never know! - let's hope it's all written before wednesday!

a monster helping of live music with no less than 4 acts...

Dave Kusworth / Darrell Bath - we welcome our first live guests under sad circumsances. founder Swell Map/Jacobite/solo artist Nikki Sudden sadly passed away on Sunday following a show in New York - a great loss. Nikki was due to play the 12-Bar club this evening with Dave Kusworth as the Jacobites and we had invited them on to todays show. Dave is going to play the gig tonight as a tribute to Nikki and has agreed to come in to Resonance to remember Nikki, he will be joined by Darrell Bath who accompanied Nikki when he came in at the beginning of the year.

ECCE - Nicholas Lisher is a London based shoegazing electronica act, formerly working as the Ex-Girlfriends. a single on awkward silence recordings is out soon and two tracks can be found on 99outof10 recordings sampler.

Skip McDonald - Skip McDonald IS Little Axe. originally from Dayton, Ohio Skip played the blues from the age of 8 (1957), although by the time he was 12 years old he had opted to perform doo-wop. Along with bassplayer Doug Wimbish and drummer Keith LeBlanc formed the house band for the pioneering rap label Sugar Hill, providing the music for some of the most seminal records of the era by Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaata et al. From there he worked closely with Adrian Sherwood on many of projects for the On-U Sound label, as well as spearheading the band Tackhead and working with Living Colour. He has been the prime mover behind Little Axe since around 1992, the debut album "Wolf That House Built" was a personal take on blues and dub, and was released to critical acclaim in 1994. Skip has continued to fuse blues and electronic music into this decade. Along with Skip we welcome back Rupert Orton from Not The Same Old Blues Crap (www.punkrockblues.co.uk) who will talking about the month-long Spitz Festival of Blues which will feature Little Axe among a large and diverse range of shows.
